Ichigo Ichie

Keitaro-san, former head chef of Kira Kira Ginza (the family snob's all time favourite japanese restaurant), moved over to Ichigo-Ichie, a japanese restaurant at Wisma Kyoei Prince replacing Kappo Don. He specialises in Sushi, Tempura and Homemade-Soba.

Apparently the fish is of a much higher quality compared to the ones at Kira Kira Ginza, which is probably why there is a price hike, but the price hike is also probably due to the location as well. Be ready to spend about 200-400,000 per person here as opposed to 50-100,000 at Kira2.

The interior, if im not mistaken retains much of its character from Kappo Don, but i might be wrong, i've been once to kappo don for a very forgettable lunch. I've heard that they've moved over to Blok M?

So how's the food?

Let's start with sushi, i've been there a number of times, but i've only eaten sushi the first time, it was good, and i have to say, probably the best i've eaten at that price range (rp125000-150000), i was very very surprised and the snob was very much looking forward to my next visit.

The next few times i opted for something else, but the family snob said that the fish was not as fresh as the first time. This is particularly difficult since it all depends on the supply of fish, and its hard to blame the chef or restaurant. For those thinking of going there, please please please check with the restaurant on whether the fish was shipped on the day you want to eat!!!!

Dont ask whether it's fresh, because for some, their definition of fresh means that the fish was freezed up since 1-3 days ago, therefore its fresh beause its thawed on the day you eat! Becareful! I experienced this at Tokio Joe, where they assured me the fish was fresh, once i got through their generous mayo-laden maki i found the fish below standard and not worth the money i was spending.

My most recent visit, I was back there on a tuesday (my designated vegetarian day), so i had kanpyo maki, zaru soba, and tempura sweet potato.

I'm happy to report that all of them were good. Ichigo really brings the true japanese experience that i'm sure many localized japanese restaurants would cut back on or dont know about.

For starters, instead of the regular tempura dipping sauce, he provided us with 4 different seasonings; green tea salt, salt and pepper, himalayan salt, and curry powder. The mandatory slice of lemon was also provided. I have to say, this preserves the crispy exterior rather than dipping it into some sauce which kinda defeats the purpose of deep frying it. Personally, with tempura i really like it with just a squeeze of lemon so the rest were secondary.

With the zaru soba, once you're done with the soba noodles, they offer the water that they boiled the soba in and pour it into the dipping sauce. The soup is healthy and works very well as a mouth cleanser as well. The only other time that I've had this was in Japan. So I have to say i was very pleasantly surprised.

If the thought of Blok M left you uncomfortable, most of the food from Kira2 can be found at Ichigo, the food is really quite good although its more expensive as opposed to Kira2. Remember to ask when the fish was shipped to avoid disappointment.
